Final Exam Wed Dec 18, 1400, TB 447
Lab 2 Will be a hardware lab - done in ME 4135. It is suggested
that you build your mixer circuit ahead of time. If you don't have a
breadboard (e.g., the one you used for ELEC 3509) you can buy one
from Sean Follows the hardware technician. I believe the cost would be
about $10.
As for due dates, since Monday October 14 is a holiday (Thanksgiving)
labs will be due one day later. That is, reports for labs scheduled
for Monday Oct 7 will be due on Tuesday Oct 15. Reports for
labs scheduled for Tuesday Oct 8 will be due on Wednesday Oct 16.
Questions and Short Answers about Lab 2
- Q. What should the calculated gain be?
- A. Expected gain is about 2 (but calculate it exactly including
value for re). Note this is gain for a single ended output.
- Q. Should I multiply gain by vc?
- A. No, if vc is large level, then vc causes switching so its
amplitude is not important. The switching action causes the 2/pi term
in the gain expression.
- Q. My measured gain is quite a bit less than my calculated
gain what did I do wrong?
- A. This is expected as there are a number of non-idealities
in the circuit - e.g., there are capacitors in the circuit that
are not large enough, and switching is not ideal. I've seen measured
gains closer to 1 than to 2.
- Q. Are there other sources of error for the filtered gain
calculation?
- A. Yes, for example, rp for the indutor is measured at 100
kHz, then an assumption is made about rp at 800 kHz.
- Q. In the last part, the calculated filtered sideband was
about 6 times higher than the measured sideband. What did I
miss?
- A. Maybe 2pi - the filter equation depends on fu-fl and
B/2 but they both have to have the same units - both Hz or both
rad/s.
