About IRES:

The Intelligent Robotic and Energy Systems (IRES) research group has been established to meet academic and industrial research needs in various fields. Applications include but not limited to mechatronics, robotics, autonomous systems, electric machine drives, sustainable energy, energy conversion and storage, energy management, vehicular technologies, and other emerging applications.

Director

Hicham Chaoui received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the Institut supérieur du Génie Appliqué (IGA), Casablanca, Morocco, in 1999, the M.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering, the M.Sc. degree in computer science (with honors), the graduate degree in project management, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering (with honors) all from the University of Quebec, QC, Canada, in 2002, 2004, 2007, and 2011, respectively. Dr. Chaoui was a recipient of the Best Thesis Award (health, natural science, and engineering) and the Governor General of Canada Gold Medal Award for his doctoral dissertation in 2012.

His career has spanned both academia and industry in the field of intelligent control and renewable energies. Prior to his academic career, he held various engineering and management positions including Vice-President of Innovation and Technology Development. He is currently an Associate Professor at Carleton University, Ottawa, ON, Canada and an Affiliate Professor at the University of Quebec, Trois-Rivières, QC, Canada. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Professor at Tennessee Technological University, TN, USA. His research interests include adaptive and nonlinear control theory, intelligent control, robotics, mechatronics, autonomous systems, electric motor drives, and energy storage and management. His scholarly work has resulted in over 150 conference and journal publications. He is a senior member of IEEE and a senior Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario. Dr. Chaoui is also an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, and several other journals. He is a recipient of the FED Research Excellence Award and the Top Editor Recognition from IEEE Vehicular Technology Society.
