Project Outline

The goal of this project create a wireless sensor that people could wear around their wrist/neck or attach/embed in their cellphone that would allow you to intelligently turn off devices in your house so as not to waste energy needlessly.  For example,  if the TV was on and no one was in the room then after some period of time the unit interfacing the TV to the wall plug will shut the TV off.  In addition to saving the power of the TV if it were on it will also elliminate any phantom power (i.e. power that devices use even when they are turned off).  The project will involve the design of one or two wireless units and associated interface circuitry.  One unit that a person can wear (User Unit) or is part of their cellphone and another that is placed between a power cable and wall plug (Control Unit).  The preferred wireless technology for this application is wifi or bluetooth.

Project Breakdown

         1. Embedded Handset Version     Write a graphical sotware app that uses the embedded wifi or bluetooth transceiver of a cellphone to transmit/receive commands/status to/from the control unit
         2. Stand Alone Version                 Construct a wifi or bluetooth trasceiver with simple button and display interface to transmit/receive commands/status to/from the control unit
         3. Control Unit Wireless               Construct a wifi or bluetooth trasceiver with simple button, display and power switch interface to receive/transmit commands/status from/to the user unit
         4. Control Unit Power Switch        Construct a power switch that can connect/disconnect power to an appliance under the control of the Control Unit Wireless
