NOTES: Chapter IV
Multiplying Out and Factoring
Rev H Dec 28, 2008
• Defines the Sum of Products (SofP) notation like ABD + CDF + ACEF
and the Product of Sums (PofS) notation like (A+C+F)(B+D)(A+D+E+F)
• Multiplying Out is just like in high school:
(A+B+C)(C+D+E)(A+C+E)
= ACA+ACC+ACE + ADA+ADC+ADE + AEA+AEC+AEE
+ BCA+BCC+BCE + BDA+BDC+BDE + BEA+BEC+BEE
+ CCA+CCC+CCE + CDA+CDC+CDE + CEA+CEC+CEE
This is easy on the brain, and hard on the pencil. It turns out, by doing
this on a K map, one can easily get
the simple answer AD+AE+BE+C
• Factoring is going the other way and is not at all like in high school.
If you can factor AD+AE+BE+C
you are so smart you don't need this chapter. |
