Marking Weights for 2010:

    Final exam                    60%          open book
                          Min 40% not withstanding your overall average
    Midterm                        20%          open book.
    Labs                             14%         groups of two.
             All labs must be completed and a report submitted to pass  the course.
    Problems, class participation, misc.        6%
             (20% if you are exempt from all labs.) 

  • You must obtain  50% on your term work (midterm, labs, problems and class participation) to pass the course.


Exams

  • All exams are open book

  • Tentative date Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb-March , 2010 in class, open book.

Similar Papers, Working Together, and Plagiarism

  • Sharing only applies to concepts and understanding. It does not apply to worked results.

  • Any nonoriginal text, even a sentence, must be enclosed in quotes and acknowledged.

  • Borrowed pictures must have be acknowledged. This includes the lab sheet.

  • Paraphrasing in which the original sentence structure is maintained is plagiarism.

  • Text copied from the lab sheets must be enclosed in quotes with the source given

  • Laboratory reports, not written by you will be confiscated in the laboratory.

  • Lab reports, which have sections copied from other reports, will treated as an plagiarism. These are dealt with by the Dean's Office

Problems

  • In Prof. Knight's section, a few short problems will be assigned after each lecture.
  • Prof. Rogers will announce you what type of assignments he will give.
  • There are no tutorial sessions.

Laboratory:

  • Half the students do labs in Even Weeks, half in Odd weeks
       Next week is week 2, even.
  • The experiments are done in pairs.
  • Choose a partner as soon as possible.

    1) Login to Moodle and go to the main ELEC2607 page.
    2) Find out who else is in the same lab section:
    - Locate the People box in the upper left of the ELEC2607 screen
    - Click on users Participants
    - In the box called   Visable Groups  select the lab group you are in (L1O, L2E, . . . )
  • In Moodle main page click on:

    - Only two people can sign up for the same group.
    - You can only sign up for one group.


    Laboratory Start-up

    • The labs start the week of January 11, 2010. This is week 2, an even week.
    • There are 4 experiments, the last one takes two lab periods.
    • The laboratories are in room 4275ME.
    • Prelab for Lab 1 is an SOB.

    Prelabs:

    • Eacn lab has a prelab.
          and sometimes a prelab quiz.
    • This prelab is checked at the start of the laboratory
    • The quiz is individual, done on a machine away from your partner.
          You may have your notes.
    • If the prelab is not complete when requested     => prelab marks = ziltch.
    • If you aren't there during the check     = >     prelab marks = ziltch.
    • The prelab prep is shared. However you will be asked questions.
      "I don't know about that part, my partner did it"      = >      prelab marks = ziltch.


    Checkout:

    • The final checkout is worth 4 out of the 20.
    • Constructed your circuit is sections,
      Have some working sections
      Not a large nonfunctioning inhomogeneous entity.


    Lab Partners, Reports, and Identification of Authors

    • Both partners will share the writing of the report.
      Each pair will submit a lab report constructed as follows:

      • Partner A will be responsible for:
        3.0 Design

      • Partner B will be responsible for:
        1.0 Introduction
        2.0 Specifications
        4.0 Implementation and Testing
        5.0 Summary
        6.0 Commentary

    • Attach the initialled prelab to your report.
    • The author shall be identified on each heading. example:
      " 4.0 Implementation and Testing (Written by Snodgrass Workaholic)"
    • Partners will trade responsibilities on alternate labs.
    • If partner does sweet nothing, don't write his sections: Read the rules!


    Co-operation between partners

    • Marks are considered for co-operation between partners.
      • These marks are lost for:

        - duplication of material by both partners.

        - changing symbols between sections.

        - handing in the sections separately.

        - the whole report is clearly one persons work.

        - partners do not alternate which sections they do between labs.

    Make a copy of the report

    • Questions on laboratory theory will appear on the exams.
      They are open book exams


    Marking Scheme for Each Lab

    • Individual marks for each section,

    • Both students will be penalized

    • for cooperation and an improper cover sheet.

      Prelab and lab work

      Marks

      a) Prelab: written, readable, reasonably complete, students can both explain the work.

      b) Both partners present during the lab and both working; successful check-out.

      Lab report: 

       

      c) Technical correctness: of explanations, of numerical values and graphs, of circuits.

      d) Organization and neatness of circuits, graphs; writing, English; Was it easy to follow?

      e) Did the partners cooperate; read each others work; smooth interfaced? If not, up to

      f) Was the receipt completely filled in and attached? If not

      Late reports are marked normally, the TA will record how many weeks late it is. (1 wk, 2 wk etc).
      Marks will be deducted later by the Course Coordinator. 




    Lab Report Submission

      Date and Time for Submission

      Reports are due at 16:00 hr one week after the lab was originally supposed to be performed.

          - After the dead line, mark x 0.7
          - After one week, mark x 0.4
          - After two week,mark x 0.25
          - 
      After four week, mark x 0.05

      All labs must be completed and submitted before before 16:00 hrs. April 7, 2009 to pass the course.


      Place to Submit Reports

      Submit in the boxes in the stairwell between blocks 41xx and 42xx, near the Minto building entrance.


      One "Emergency Late"

      • You have one "emergency late" of up to one week for your report.
        Do not squander this "emergency late".
        A 2nd waiver will need very major emergencies with extensive documentation on the problems for both "lates."

    Laboratory Exemption for 2010

      1.  Lab exemptions are NOT automatic. You must apply on or before Jan 15, 2009

      2.   Lab exemptions will have the lab section Excused listed in Moodle's Groups Moodle login.
        - Click on users Participants
        - In the box called   Visable Groups  select [Excused ]

        - If you are listed you are not exempt.


      If you are granted an exemption

      1. You must submit all the assigned problems, even if submission is waived for the rest of the class.

      2. If the lowest mark is dropped, yours will be counted. 

      3. Your average problem mark will replace the mark for the excused labs.
        => problems worth 20%

      4. You will be expected to know the theoretical part of the labs on examinations.


    Other Special Consideration

    • If, for religious reasons, you may not attend exams on certain dates,
      email Prof. Knight on or before Jan. 16, 2010.
    • Requests via the Paul Menton Centre should be submitted to Prof. Knight on or before Jan. 16, 2010.
