Reports are late after 16:00 hrs one week after the day your lab was scheduled.
    - After the dead line, your mark is multiplied by 0.7
    - After one week, your mark is multiplied by 0.4
    - After two week, your mark is multiplied by 0.25
    -
After four week, your mark is multiplied by 0.05
However all reports must be submitted, and submitted on or before 16:00 hrs. April 9, 2008
      subject to any earlier
course deadline.

Things to Do Immediately

  • Establish a Moodle account soon. You can't do the next steps without one. Moodle Login
You will have to have one to do the next three steps.
  • Register for a lab day. The labs start next week.
This is rough. However you finish all labs two weeks early,  just when the work really piles up.
  • Choose a lab partner.
  • If you are repeating the course, apply for a lab exemption before Jan 16, 2008.
  • If you have applications from the Paul Menton Centre, submit these requests on or before Jan 18, 2008.
  • If you will not be able to write the midterm or final on certain days, make this known before Jan 18, 2008.
  • Download the 1st lab, The Telephone Switch Lab, and read it. It comes up very fast.
If you need help on the prelab try room 5144ME 10:00 to 16:00 lecture times excepted, or come to the lab Friday, Jan 11, 2008 at 9:30.

    Midterm

Midterm will be open book, and written in class. Studying methods for open book exams are quite different than for closed book exams.
The midterm date is Wednesday, March 5, 2008 , the 2nd week after break.
    Seating for midterm

  • Lab Partners

Lab Partner and Slot Choice for 2008

    1.   Students in 2607 work in groups of two.
Groups of 3 are NOT allowed.
Groups of 1 are tolerated, but if there is another single in the lab, you will be matched with them.
    2.   If you have someone you want to work with, register in the same laboratory section.
    3.   Each partner is responsible for certain sections of the lab report, which are identified by name.
It is possible for you to get D (F?) on your sections and your partner to get A on theirs.
    4.   Divorce requires the agreement of both partners, and it also requires you both to find new partners.  It is much better to have a compatible partner.
If you are choosing a partner "blind", ask questions:
    5.  If you are not sure about your partner, start working on the prelab together. The first prelab is so nasty, that if you can co-operate on that, you should be able to handle anything.
    6.  As soon as you and your partner have reached a mutual agreement, make your selection here

    Mark Weightings for 2008

Final exam                    60%          open book      Min 40% not withstanding your overall average
Midterm                        20%          open book.    This will be returned to students. See the note below on minimum term work.
Labs                             14%         groups of two.  All labs must be completed and an acceptable report submitted to pass  the course.
Problems, class participation, misc.        6%          (20% if you are exempt from all labs.)  Also see the note below on term work.
    1. You must obtain  50% on your term work (midterm, labs, problems and class participation) to pass the course.
Thus if you get 80% in the labs, and do no problems etc., you need at least  44% on the midterm.
If you get 90% in the labs, and do no problems etc., you need at least  37% on the midterm.
    2. The final examination is for evaluation purposes only and will not be returned to students.
    3. All persons exempt from more than one lab are required to submit all assigned problems, including ones which
other students were not required to hand in.
Your average problem and class mark becomes your mark for the undone labs. Thus if you are exempt from
all labs, your problems and class mark counts (14+6)% of your total mark.

    Health and Safety

    Read the lab rules.
All students and TAs are required to read the University Health-And-Safety document.
The parts that seems to especially apply to ELEC 2607 are:
Sect 5 part a)  Neither food nor beverages are permitted in the lab.
    Sect 5 part i)  Know:
Where the nearest fire extinguisher is. In the hallway beside the single door.
The number for emergencies. It is 613-520-4444 or just 4444 on Carleton phones,
Where a first aid kit is. There is one in 4257 ME beside the single door. However do not treat things yourself; go to
HEALTH AND COUNSELLING SERVICES (building TT on the Campus Map)
2600 Training and Technology Centre, 613-520-6674.
Sect 6.3 part a) Clean up!

    FootNotes
    Studying for open book exams
During the final exam, one student asked me, " Isn't there something special about two Karnaugh maps?"
When I just smiled he said, "I guess that is part of the question isn't it? But you can tell me can't you?
I could find it in the notes but it would take me fifteen minutes."

For open-book exams, you need to understand methods and principles, and know how to use them. You also need to have your notes well indexed. Memorization must be selective, for example:

You will not be asked  to state the Simplification Rule, A + XA =A,  and you are very unlikely to be asked to prove it, because you can copy it out of your notes. However, when doing logic, one should have learned to scan every line for obvious reductions using that rule. This can cut down the work required by a large amount.  Markers  have only a polite smile for people who don't use the Simplification Rule, and then write on their last page, "I knew how to do everything but the exam was so long I couldn't finish!"

    Open door policy
Para Transpo usually gets Prof. Knight here somewhere between 9:20 and 10:15. He has to be downstairs to be picked up at 16:30 sharp. He is usually in his office, and if he is just getting coffee, in the washroom etc., his door will be open.  If you don't find him leave a note stating when you will be back, and he will try to be there. Note that he will not be there around the 11:30-13:00 and 14:30-16:00 lecture time on Monday and Wednesday. Also he often goes to to the lab for some time on lab mornings, so check there.
If you come at 16:25, you will have to follow Prof. Knight downstairs to wait for Para. He will talk to you until they come, but he makes no predictions on how long that will be, except that the lower bound is less than zero.

    Office Hours
Ask Prof Ray questions after his lectures either in the lecture hall, or upon his return to his office in 4146 ME. To make an apointment, try leaving a note on his door, and/or email him .

    DeMorgan's Theorem and Legal Jargon
The original statement was "Food and beverages are not permitted in the lab.."  Logically, if F=Food, and B=Beverage, this statement means the expression   ~(F&B)   must be true. It would be true for  F,B=0,0 as intended.  However it would also be true for F,B = 0,1 (beverages only);  or  1,0 (food only) which is clearly not what was intended.  There is more on this in the section of notes on DeMorgan's Theorem, or see -
Ronald B. Standler's humorous and informative site about English
, written by a real engineer who is also a lawyer.
