General FAQ

How to change the doe.carleton.ca password?

There are two ways to change the password at DOE.

Using Windows

At any time go 'Ctrl-Alt-Del' and pick 'Change Password'

Using UNIX

The command passwd will allow to change your password.

How to edit pdf files

The software Acrobat is avaiable to install. Please follow the instrutions here.

How to scan documents

The computer located in the back right corner of ME5174 has a scanner attached. To use double click the icon "HP Photo & Imaging" on the desktop.

How to use colour printer

NOTE:The colour printer is only avaiable from Window machines.

Follow the instructions here and pick the printer ME5174c.

NOTE: Graduate students have to 10 pages/month quota on that printer. The quota is accumative for one year and reset on May 1st every year. To check your balance click run the following program S:\pmpclient55\Checkpages.exe one colour page costs $10.00.

How to access UNIX files

Graduate students that use a computer on the domain:doe.carleton.ca will have access to their UNIX files by using the U: drive. If you are not on the domain:doe.carleton.ca use these instructions(How to Access W: Drive).

How to remotely access UNIX files

To access your files remotely log on to http://webmail.doe.carleton.ca, then click on "My Account" on the left panel and then "File Manager". Your home directory will be listed.

How to forward DoE email to another account

To forward your Department of Electronics email to another email account, you must edit the file /var/imap/'your username'/.forward, on any Sun machines.The file should contain a single line with only the email address.

How to print to department printers

Follow the instructions here

. When you add the print you will be prompted for an account for the Username enter "doe.carleton.ca\accountname" and your password.

How to access your Unix home directory.

There are two ways to connect or map a network share.

 1. Using the command line
   Go Start -> Run type in cmd and click OK
   Use /PERSISTENT if you want the drive automatically mapped each time you logon to the PC.
   a) For graduate students use the server gradfs.doe.carleton.ca. If that does not work use the server 134.117.9.121
   b) For undergraduate studentsuse the server ugradfs.doe.carleton.ca. If that does not work use the server 134.117.38.13
net use w: \\{server}\{your username} /user:doe.carleton.ca\{your username} (/PERSISTENT:yes)


 1. Using Windows Explorer
Go Tools -> Map Network Drive
map1 (16K)

Type in the folder
\\{server}\{your username}
Click "differnet user name."
   Username:doe.carleton.ca\{your username}
   Password:Your Electroincs Password.

How to FTP.

Anonymous FTP:

-Connecting to the DOE FTP server from an internet computer

ftp ftp.doe.carleton.ca

ftp login prompt: anonymous

password: your_email_address

-Connecting to the DOE FTP server using a web browser

ftp://ftp.doe.carleton.ca


-Uploading a file

  -command line: cd incoming

      put filename

   -web browser: drag and drop into incoming folder

-Downloading a file

   -command line: cd pub/<user_name>   ex: cd pub/mr.smith

    get filename

   -web browser: click on pub, click on user directory and filename.


DOE network user access to FTP files:

Login on a unix system with your <user_account>

FTP directories: /home/ftp/pub/<user_account>

   -”read only by the internet “ directories; for file download

   -private pub directories are installed by the Sys Administrator

   -to make a file available to the internet: cp filename /home/ftp/pub/<user_account> /filename

FTP directory: /home/ftp/incoming

   -”write only from the internet” directory; for file upload

   -to retreive an uploaded file from the internet: cp /home/ftp/incoming/filename filename

   -inform the Sys Administrator that the file was retreived and it will get deleted from the ftp site.


SFTP access to DOE

-Use SSH to ssh.doe.carleton.ca (See SSH procedures for tunneling)

    -create ftp or sftp tunnel and use an ftp program with the set tunnel port.
